Bell Let’s Talk Day: Amplifying Youth Mental Health Together

By Dr. Anju Bajaj, Chair, Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba

On January 22, we will unite once again for Bell Let’s Talk Day, a powerful initiative that invites us to reflect on the importance of mental health and take actionable steps to support those in need. This year, I am proud to stand with the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba (MDAM) as we amplify our commitment to youth mental health—a cause that is not just timely but absolutely vital.

The Mental Health Crisis in Youth

Today, more young people than ever before are navigating the challenges of mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. According to recent studies, one in five youth will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Yet, stigma and a lack of accessible resources often prevent them from seeking help.

At MDAM, we see firsthand the impact of mental health struggles on young lives. As an organization and the board, we’re deeply committed to breaking down these barriers by creating safe spaces, offering support programs, and building awareness. Bell Let’s Talk Day provides a platform to shine a light on these efforts and inspire collective action.

Supporting Youth Through Bell Let’s Talk

This year’s Bell Let’s Talk Day focuses on community-based initiatives that make a real difference. Every interaction counts—whether it’s a conversation, a text, or even a simple gesture of kindness. Together, we can reduce stigma and foster an environment where youth feel empowered to seek help.

Here’s how MDAM is contributing to the cause:

  • Youth-Centered Programs: We offer support groups and workshops tailored specifically for young people, addressing their unique challenges in a supportive and inclusive way.
  • Educational Outreach: Through partnerships with schools, we aim to equip students and educators with tools to recognize and address mental health challenges.
  • Advocacy: We actively advocate for policies that increase funding for youth mental health resources and reduce wait times for essential services.

How You Can Help

Bell Let’s Talk Day is more than a campaign—it’s a call to action. Here are some simple yet impactful ways you can contribute:

  1. Engage in the Conversation: Share stories, tips, and resources using #BellLetsTalk on social media to spread awareness.
  2. Support Local Organizations: Donate or volunteer with MDAM or other community groups dedicated to youth mental health.
  3. Be an Ally: Reach out to the young people in your life, listen without judgment, and offer support when needed.

A Shared Responsibility

As the Chair of MDAM, I am humbled by the resilience of young people who face mental health challenges and by the unwavering dedication of our volunteers, staff, and supporters. Together, we can ensure that no young person feels alone in their journey toward mental wellness.

This Bell Let’s Talk Day, let’s commit to building a future where every youth has access to the mental health resources they need to thrive. By working together, we can create a ripple effect of positive change—one conversation at a time.
