As we observe Brain Health Awareness Month this March, it’s essential to recognize the profound connection between brain health and mental well-being. At the Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba (MDAM), our mission is to provide support, education, and advocacy for individuals living with mental health challenges through peer support and other services.
Understanding the science behind mental health not only helps break stigma but also encourages informed, proactive care. For instance, recognizing how mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder are linked to brain function can lead to more effective treatments and support strategies. By fostering a deeper understanding, we empower individuals to seek help and adopt healthier lifestyles.
Throughout March, MDAM is hosting various events to promote brain health. One such initiative is our weekly Game Night, held every Friday from 6 PM to 10 PM at our Fort Street location. These gatherings offer a fun and supportive environment, emphasizing the importance of social connections in maintaining mental health.
Additionally, we are excited to announce the ‘Minds in Bloom Fundraising Luncheon & Artistic Design Competition.’ Tickets are available at early bird pricing until March 31st, with all funds raised supporting MDAM’s youth mental health programs. The Artistic Design Competition portion of this event is open to Manitoba artists and the deadline to submit your designs is April 15, 2025.
We also invite community members to explore volunteer opportunities with MDAM. Roles such as Peer Support Phone Line volunteers and Support Group Facilitators are crucial in extending our reach and impact. Volunteering not only supports others but also enriches personal well-being and fosters a sense of community.
This month, let’s commit to understanding and nurturing our brain health. By doing so, we pave the way for a future where mental health is prioritized, and everyone has access to the support they need.
